Some factory-made tools are sold without handles, so they have to be purchased separately or craftsmen make do-it-yourself pens. This can be hacksaw blades, files for wood and metal, reamers, etc. Sometimes the handle can simply break due to decay or incorrect actions, for example, when it is struck with a hammer.
In some cases, you have to improvise and come up with a tool from improvised materials in order to finish work on time or to eliminate an unexpected breakdown. How to get out of the situation in such cases? Indeed, working without handles is not entirely convenient, the performance will be low and, most importantly, unsafe: you can accidentally injure your fingers.
What can be adapted to the handle of the numerous objects and products surrounding us? With one degree or another, many of them can be chosen. But today we will focus on one option.

How to turn a door canopy into a handle

At first glance, such a metamorphosis may seem impossible, but we will not succumb to this hasty decision: we will try to disassemble the mortise door hinge, which is not difficult at all. We move the axle pin from place with the help of a suitable steel rod in diameter, hitting it with a hammer from above.

Then, grabbing the pin from below with the jaws of the pliers, we pull it out completely.

In our hands we will have a frame plate (wing, card) with three hinges and a door with two. We put them together so that the hinges are combined and form a through channel. Then we select a bolt that is suitable in diameter, the length of which should exceed the height of our door canopy, with a thread on the end.

Hitting the bolt head, immerse it in the through channel until the head rests against the end of the canopy plates.

Insert the appropriate diameter screws into the extreme holes of the wings and screw them on the back of the wing nut.

We buy a ready-made wooden handle or make it ourselves with a hole in the center, strengthening the seat with a tight-fitting aluminum cap with a hole in the middle. We wind the handle onto the thread of the bolt connecting the canopy plates to the stop.

Our home-made appliance based on the door hinge is completely ready for use for the intended purpose.

We take a hacksaw blade and insert a loop between the cards with one end, and then tightly clamp it with the wing nuts. The tool is firmly fixed in the handle-holder and with the help of this combined design it is possible to cut thick boards and wooden blocks.

Here is a file or a small file. We clamp the shank with our device and you can quite conveniently, without fear of injuring your fingers, begin to grind the ends of wooden products and even perform grooves and various recesses.

Our pen can even be used for an impromptu instrument, for example, rough sandpaper wrapped around a piece of hacksaw blade on metal. We also clamp this symbiosis into our tool holder between the wings of the loop along the long side and you can use it instead of a file to process the edges and create separate indentations on the faces of the workpiece.

Holder upgrade options

In principle, you can do without disassembling the mortise canopy. Enough for this to put a wooden handle on a hard plate. Then it can be clamped together with the tool from opposite sides of the canopy. In this case, most labor-intensive operations disappear, and a lot of time is saved.
Our temporary homemade product can stay with us for a long time, because it is quite functional and can be useful even in the conditions of a carpentry workshop. To make it safer to use, you can round the corners of the plates with an emery wheel or just a file for metal.
