Such a home-made machine will greatly facilitate the lives of craftsmen who often have to manually saw metal with a hacksaw.

What you need to have


The main drive is an electric meat grinder. The machine itself is made of metal. To make it, you need a strip with a thickness of about 2 mm and a width of 1-2 cm, a metal pipe with a diameter of 0.5 inches, a length of about 50 cm, selected depending on the overall dimensions of the machine bed. The frame itself is made of profiled pipes of square and rectangular cross-section, size 30 × 30 mm, 10 × 20 mm.

For the foundation, sheet metal is needed, dimensions depending on the dimensions of the meat grinder. Parts are assembled with M8 bolts; washers are required to provide articulated joints. Welded frame, respectively, need a welding machine.
Preparatory operations for the auger of the meat grinder are done on a lathe, the holes are drilled on a drill. The metal is cut by a grinder, it also removes burrs. Of course, you need a complete set of measuring tools. After assembly, the machine is painted with paints for metal.

Manufacturing technology


Disassemble the electric meat grinder, remove the feed screw from the body. Measure the length of the drive arm that will drive the hacksaw for metal. In our case, this is about 10 cm, the lever is from a metal strip 20 × 2 mm.

Mark the locations of the holes and drill them. There are three holes, two near the ends and one at a short distance and the first. These are mounting holes, later they are used to assemble the structure.

Grinder cut the strip to size.
Place the auger in a lathe and drain off excess metal. Remove one turn of the auger, this is necessary to prepare the stop place for the vertical support and to place the drive lever.

Mark the location of the support hole for the prepared auger on the strip. This parameter should be as accurate as possible.
Drill a hole at the point found. Its diameter corresponds to the diameter of the ground platform of the screw.
Cut off the excess length of the strip, the distance from the hole is about 5 mm. No particular accuracy is required here.
From a profile pipe 10 × 20 mm, make a frame body for fixing the meat grinder. Measure its length and width, apply pipes around the perimeter and grinder cut off the desired dimensions.

From a metal sheet, cut the warp for the frame body of the meat grinder. Take off the dimensions so that three profiled pipes are welded around the perimeter.
Weld to the workpiece plate, stitch the seams on both sides.
Clamp the screw in a vice, put two plates on the ground platform (they were made at the initial stages), and weld the short upper one to the screw. Weld a stud or bolt to the second hole of this plate. This part will cause the hacksaw to move. The second strip performs the function of the vertical support of the screw, it should rotate freely on it. Mark its length, put the auger in the meat grinder and weld the strip to the base of the frame body to fix the meat grinder. Dimensions should be as accurate as possible, the screw should rotate freely, without jamming and in a horizontal plane.

To prevent welding scale from damaging the plastic case of the meat grinder, make any protective barrier.
Make bushings, each about 3 cm long, cut the pipe into the necessary pieces. The inner diameter of these bushings (diameter of the passage) should be equal to the outer diameter of the machine pipe. She will move in them, the smoother the move - the better.

Slide the two bushings onto the drive pipe and secure them together with a metal strip. The distance between the bushings is selected taking into account the length of the blade. Pay attention that the bushings are located strictly on one axis, and the strip is perpendicular to their diameters, these are important parameters. Check the smooth running of the assembly.

Remove the scale, make sure the quality of the weld. Cut another one along the length of the welded strip. Weld it on the opposite side of the bushings.

Cut a piece of strip 7 cm long, weld it to the movable pipe. The part should be in the center, it maintains the vertical position of the hacksaw during operation of the machine. Weld the same part on the other hand, between them there is a long strip connecting two bushings.

Make a strip for attaching the hacksaw blade, its length is 8 cm. Drill a hole for the hacksaw, weld to the frame.

Cut the second strip, its length should be shorter by about 1 cm, the sleeve of the web tensioning mechanism will be welded to it. Weld the sleeve to the strip, and then the finished part to the movable frame.
Set the hacksaw for metal in the legs, check its position and the operability of all elements. Weld them to long strips of the movable pipe. In this way, the drive frame is made, a hacksaw is fixed in it.

The tension of the web is done with a hairpin, measure its length and cut the workpiece. Grind one end on an emery, make its surfaces flat. The hacksaw cloth adjoins to them.
Drill a hole with a 3-5 mm diameter on the flat end for a hacksaw fixing bolt.
In the vertical support of the hacksaw (it is possible in the one to which the tension tube is welded), drill a hole. It should be located in the middle of the height.
Drill a hole of the same diameter in a metal strip. This part will act as a connecting rod and transmit back / forth movements from the auger of the meat grinder to the frame of the hacksaw.

Try on the nodes, mark the location of the second hole and drill it. Cut off excess strips in length. All movable elements are ready, proceed to the frame.

Machine frame manufacturing


Drill a hole in the end of the stationary tube.
Make two strips with holes, use the first as a template, to increase the accuracy of measurements, clamp them with a clamp or a special device. The length of the strips should be approximately 8 cm higher than the height of the screw from the horizon.

Assemble the assembly: install strips on both sides of the tube and insert a bolt into the holes. Weld the tube supports to the frame of the meat grinder.
Cut a piece from the profiled pipe 30 × 30 mm, this will be the main supporting element of the bed, parts for fixing the vice are welded to it. The length of the pipe is approximately 35-40 cm.
With a grinder, carefully remove all sharp corners and burrs from the previously movable installation frame of the hacksaw blade.
From the profile pipe 10 × 20 mm, cut two pieces of a length of about 10 cm, they are needed to fix the vice for the parts to be sawn on the machine. Drill bolt holes in them.
From the sheet steel, cut out two rectangles for fixation, about 5 × 10 cm in size, drill four holes in the corners with a diameter of 4-5 mm.
Weld the bed components into a single structure. Watch their position, everything should be strictly vertical and parallel, the angles between adjacent elements and nodes only straight.
Clean the metal surfaces from rust and paint the machine. It is recommended to use blue paint for stationary parts, for moving green. Pre-cover the sliding tube with paper - paint will create unnecessary resistance to movement.

Now it remains to assemble the nodes of the machine. Use appropriate bolts, washers, and nuts. Do not tighten the hardware strongly; they must have freedom of rotation or rolling. So that the nuts do not spontaneously unscrew, they should all be clamped with locknuts.

First, check the operability of the movable frame of the hacksaw. Everything is normal - continue assembling the machine. Reinstall the hacksaw, pull it.

Screw the vise, insert a piece of metal into them, turn on the machine and enjoy the results of your work.
